Description
Position Overview
Our Children’s Ministry (Freedom Kids) is built on a simple conviction: children are not a distraction from the mission of the church; they are central to it.
The Children’s Ministry Director leads and shepherds the Freedom Kids ministry (4 years old–5th grade), cultivating an environment where children are known, loved, and discipled through faithful presence and gospel-centered relationships.
This role equips volunteers to shepherd children well, partners with parents in raising their children to follow Jesus, and stewards the ministry systems that support a large volunteer team and a safe, organized environment for children to grow.
The director serves as part of the Family Ministry team under the leadership of the Family Pastor.
About Freedom Kids
Freedom Kids exists to embody Jesus for younger generations by helping children grow as welcomed and discipled members of God’s family.
We believe children are not a distraction from the mission of the church; they are central to it. Rather than functioning as childcare so parents can attend church, Freedom Kids exists to disciple children, encourage parents, and form volunteers who reflect the heart of Jesus.
Because of this, our ministry culture prioritizes:
- Intentional presence
- Shared discipleship
- Humility
- Love
We are looking for a leader who believes deeply in this vision and is excited to shepherd children and equip volunteers within it.
What Makes Freedom Kids Different
Freedom Kids is built on a philosophy that may feel different from many children’s ministries.
Rather than focusing primarily on entertainment, large events, or keeping children busy while adults attend church, we prioritize relational discipleship and faithful shepherding.
We believe children are real members of the church today. They are capable of asking meaningful questions, wrestling with faith, and growing in their understanding of Jesus. Because of this, our ministry focuses on creating environments where children are known, listened to, and gently guided toward truth.
Volunteers are not treated as babysitters but as shepherds who walk alongside children with patience, curiosity, and love. Parents are not spectators but essential partners in discipleship.
Our goal is not simply to create enjoyable Sunday experiences but to help children know Jesus, trust Him, and grow as disciples within the family of God.
Theological & Ministry Philosophy Alignment
Freedom Kids is shaped by a set of convictions about children, discipleship, and the role of the church. The Children’s Ministry Director should resonate deeply with these commitments and lead the ministry in alignment with them.
We believe:
- Children are disciples today, not just future believers. They are full members of the church who can know, trust, and follow Jesus.
- Discipleship happens primarily through relationships, not programming. Children are formed through loving presence, patient conversation, and faithful example.
- Volunteers are shepherds, not babysitters. Leaders enter the world of children with humility, attentiveness, and care, reflecting the heart of Jesus.
- Parents are the primary disciple-makers of their children. The role of the church is to support, encourage, and equip parents as they raise their children in the faith.
- The goal of ministry is transformation, not entertainment. Our aim is not simply to keep children busy but to help them understand the gospel and grow in trust and obedience to Jesus.
- Small moments of shepherding matter deeply. Listening carefully, asking thoughtful questions, and guiding children gently toward truth can shape their understanding of God for a lifetime.
The Freedom Kid's Director will help ensure that every aspect of Freedom Kids, from volunteer development to Sunday gatherings, reflects these convictions.
Who This Role Is For
This role is for someone who believes children are real members of the church today, not just future participants.
The ideal candidate will:
- Genuinely love children and value the role they play in God’s Kingdom and family
- Care deeply about children’s spiritual formation, well-being, and place in the life of the church
- Care deeply about helping children understand the gospel
- Enjoy developing and encouraging volunteers
- Value relationships and discipleship more than programs and events
- Be comfortable leading within an established ministry vision
- Desire to partner with parents as primary disciple-makers
- Thrive in a collaborative family ministry team
- Be humble, teachable, and spiritually mature
This person will find joy in small moments of shepherding, listening to a child’s question, encouraging a volunteer, or helping a parent feel supported.
Who This Role May Not Be For
This role may not be the best fit for someone who:
- Primarily enjoys running large programs or events
- Prefers working independently rather than building teams
- Wants to create their own ministry philosophy from scratch
- Is uncomfortable equipping volunteers to share leadership
- Is more energized by administration than relationships
- Views children’s ministry primarily as childcare during services
Freedom Kids is built on the belief that children are formed through loving presence and faithful shepherding, not just programming. We are looking for someone who shares that conviction.
The Opportunity
The Children’s Ministry Director will lead and develop Freedom Kids (ages 4 through 5th grade) by cultivating a ministry environment where children are known, loved, and discipled.
This role focuses less on managing programs and more on developing people — equipping volunteers to shepherd children, and partnering with families as they raise their kids to follow Jesus.
The Children’s Ministry Director is part of the Family Ministry leadership team, working alongside the Family Pastor, Student Ministry leadership, and Nursery Leadership to cultivate a unified approach to discipling children, students, and families.
Freedom Kids includes a large and dedicated volunteer team of over 100 leaders serving across multiple classrooms and age groups each Sunday. The Children’s Ministry Director will lead, develop, and support this team while ensuring that the systems behind the ministry allow volunteers to serve children well.
The Children’s Ministry Director will help refine and execute the vision of Freedom Kids in partnership with the Family Pastor. While ministry structures may evolve over time, the core vision of shepherding children and partnering with families remains central. This role carries meaningful leadership responsibility while operating within a culture of collaboration, humility, and pastoral oversight.
Leadership Posture & Collaboration
The Children’s Ministry Director serves under the leadership of the Family Pastor and as part of the Family Ministry team. This role is not designed to operate independently but to collaborate in shaping a unified approach to discipling children and families at Freedom Fellowship.
While the director will have significant leadership responsibility within Freedom Kids, the vision and direction of the ministry are held in partnership with the Family Pastor and church leadership.
The ideal candidate is someone who leads with humility, communicates openly, welcomes feedback, and values collaboration over personal control.
